It’s true! We are moving to a state whose motto is “The Way Life Should Be” . . . MAINE!

Come say goodbye on Wednesday, June 6th at our last Freerange installment of the season! You ask: WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, THE NEXT E.B. WHITE? Why Maine? Answers to those questions and more all in my most recent interview with NYC’s beloved Julia Bartz, aka Book Stalker: BOOK STALKED
More soon!

Stephen King’s “11/22/1963,” about a time traveler who attempts to prevent John F. Kennedy’s assassination, was among the winners Friday at the 32nd annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. –LA Times April 20, 2012
Yet another win by Stephen King.
This guy is prolific. By the time one finishes reading a Stephen King novel, let alone watch a trailer for a movie based on one of his stories, the man has already penned three new books.
I read a whole lot of Stephen King when I was a little kid. His books and movies not only inspired me to be a professional storyteller, but his imagination was a major influence on many of my adult neuroses. I realize how many of my common, every day fears were shaped by his work. For example:
Fear of seeing a creature outside plane window: The Langoliers
Fear of trolls sucking the soul out of my mouth while I sleep: Cat’s Eye
Fear of kids with Amish-sounding names: Children of the Corn
Fear of corn mazes: Children of the Corn
Fear of hitting gypsies with a car: Thinner
Fear of walk-in-refrigerators and long hotel hallways: The Shining
Fear of crawling through mile-long pipe filled with poop: Shawshank Redemption
Fear of smoking: Quitters, Inc.
Fear of quitting smoking: Quitters Inc.
Fear of convenience stores in Maine during blizzards: One for the Road
Fear of dog slobber: Cujo
Fear of the bossa nova: Needful Things
Fear of a breakout of eyeballs on hands: I Am the Doorway
Fear of washing machines: The Mangler
Fear of teasing waifish young women: Carrie
Fear of turning into fungus: Grey Matter
Fear of ever having a fan of my writing: Misery

Unless Access Hollywood is your #1 news source, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that when it comes to vaginas, the Republicans have lost their minds. Current political debates surrounding the subject of female reproductive rights are just bewildering and bonkers: zero women on the recent female contraceptive congressional hearing? And what’s this about aspirin between the legs?! Questions about a woman’s freedom to choose are urgent, important, and complex, and rather than rely on an all-male congressional panel, I think it’s vital that we listen to–and share–our individual stories. I don’t know about you, but I prefer not to be generalized. When it comes to my healthcare–and my freedom–I prefer to have a say in it.
This week, The Rumpus published an essay of mine about “the uterus and the American Dream”, and on March 1st, Guernica Magazine will be running another. I’d love it if you’d take the time to check out my story, and pass it along to your friends/family if you feel moved. I hope that by sharing my story, others (male, female, you, your mom, anyone!) will be encouraged to speak up, too.
Thanks for reading, and ONWARD!
Love,
Mira
